Waldeck Pyrmontlaan

This house is situated at the Waldeck Pyrmontlaan and was built around 1930 in the old neighbourhood Oegstgeest. It is the home to my father and his partner. For this project I was asked to make the initial sketches and drawings for the renovation of the kitchen, a new garden room, and the attic.

In order to fulfil the wish of the client to create a comfortable room for inviting guests, a spacious garden room was added at the back of the house, from which one enters the garden. In the design of this garden room, the original double doors in the back facade are preserved. In this way, it is possible to completely close the garden room from the living room, while sustaining the old character of the house. Through the storey high windows and the two large, operable skylights in the ceiling, day light enters the room throughout the day.
In the new design, the kitchen space continues into the garden room, to ensure that the conversation between the client and guests is never interrupted. This atmosphere is visually amplified by extending the kitchen worktop, the Belgian bluestone flooring, and slatted timber ceiling from the kitchen into the garden room. This creates one large comfortable room for cooking and inviting family and friends over for dinner.

The design of the transformation of the attic accommodates in the same wish for housing guests. Back in the days, the attic was divided into two sleeping rooms, and storage space. For the redesign of the attic, all walls went down.  A custom made cupboard was designed in order to separate the newly created space in two parts; a sleeping area with a bathroom and a dressing and washing area. The cupboard only visually divides the space in two, which results in a guest room that feels bright and spacious. The shelves of the cupboard were designed in such a way, that the client could fill them with collected attributes to provide a very personal touch to the place.

The garden room and kitchen are currently under construction.
